Long term supply partnership and Covid-19 response for specialist PPE producer

Our client is a premier manufacturer of innovative respiratory and personal protective equipment and safety devices for firefighters, industrial workers, police, militaries, security forces, and rescue teams around the world.

Pertemps relationship with this client in the UK originates as far back as 1997.  Over the past 20 plus years, the name and the ownership of the business has changed multiple times but all along the way Pertemps has been a constant in relation to temporary and permanent hiring.

Temporary worker supply, in the main, has been at the client’s site based in the North West since 1997 to the present day. We have also seen requirements for occasional volume supply to their other site located in Scotland. Permanent hiring support has also been provided across the UK.

In 2007, Pertemps became sole supplier of all Production /Industrial requirements. From this our supply then progressively diversified into further supply of temporary commercial and technical personnel, as well as providing recruitment support for permanent appointments, adding breadth and market reach to the client’s own recruitment team.

Temporary production and associated blue collar worker usage is very much order book driven, so Pertemps has to be flexible in our management of the contract allowing for ramp ups and workforce scale downs as required to meet the client’s needs.  On average the client will sustain a core temporary workforce of approximately 30-40 heads for the majority of the year, only increasing and decreasing this pool in line with additional orders. Maximum numbers have been as high as 90 workers at any time.

The recruitment process is tailored exactingly to the client’s requirements and includes CV shortlisting, site tours and assignment familiarisation's for prospective candidates as standard.

During 2020, as a major manufacturer of specialist PPE, the client needed to increase their production capacity in order to support a number of their contracts with frontline support organisations, including the NHS. With the restrictions needed on close working preventing a simple increase in headcount on the normal production floor setup, a decision was made to create a new continental shift to allow for increased product output. Pertemps were tasked with staffing this shift with an additional 20 temporary production workers. This was achieved with 100% fill rate providing quality operatives with 2 weeks’ notice through remote recruiting efforts, ensuring the new shift was successful in meeting these important orders requirements. The shift was in place from July to November 2020.

Prior to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Pertemps provided weekly onsite surgeries for temporary workers to support them on their assignments and be available for any questions or queries they may have. This support is now provided remotely but we still have a virtual ‘open door’ policy in place so workers know that can reach out to us as required.

Pertemps also supply to the client:

  • weekly and monthly MI highlighting usage stats and performance levels,
  • market intelligence data to inform hiring strategy and workforce planning activities
