Our client is the world's leading manufacturer of chocolate, chewing gum, mints and fruity confections. Their operations cover a number of UK sites including the Slough HQ and a gum manufacturing base in Plymouth.
Pertemps has a longstanding supplier relationship with this client, spanning around 20 years. Throughout this time, we have supported across a wide variety of temporary hiring needs with the core focus for day-to-day recruitment undertaken by Pertemps being for production staff. There is also a steady requirement for Warehouse and FLT Drivers to support the operation.

Over the many years, we have supported the client in Plymouth the volume and nature of requirements have fluctuated but we have seen sustained volume across the production line with a daily number of between 60 and 180 temporary workers in the core skills areas. As the manufacturing process has evolved the volumes of temporary staff have decreased in line with efficiencies seen through task automation.
Pertemps services the account with a dedicated team of Consultants and an Account Manager as well as utilising support functions such as payroll and HR to add value and depth to the service delivery and relationship. Regular onsite presence has always been a fundamental element of the relationship and our account team spend time on the shop floor and with the client every week to support the workforce and ensure we have full oversight of emerging needs.
Real value has been driven through building strong local relationships between our delivery team and the client’s key service users and contract stakeholders promoting strong, open communication channels and ensuring any issues are resolved swiftly and effectively.
Our approach to temporary worker welfare has proven to ensure strong retention and has ultimately led to the long-term success of our relationship. Other than occasional short term projects the norm is for assignments to be long term, ongoing bookings so retention is key. Being on-site every week, being visible and approachable provides our workers with the opportunity to properly interact with us, communicate their issues and know that we will do everything we can to assist them.
Our team provide pre-assignment dexterity testing and conduct a paper test on engineering, mechanical understanding and general Maths and English comprehension as required by the role. We also coordinate client-specific onboarding activities including pre-assignment medicals for all staff.
During 2020, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, our weekly onsite presence and worker inductions had to switch to offsite activities. These, carried out with a high level of efficiency, have still provided the full range of service and quality required and expected.
